When I was helping my sister look for vitamins on the weekend, in the same aisle I happened to notice whey isolate powders and various meal replacement products. After some pondering, I decided to do a little research about these daunting plastic tubs.
My biggest question was, can consuming this much protein make me fat? I had heard what may be a misconception years ago: that drinking whey shakes make you gain fat. However, my logical thinking makes me believe that it cannot make a person fat because protein builds muscle. Hmm...
To the best of my ability, here's what I have determined: Drinking protein before and after a workout is strongly recommended if you work out regularly. When your muscles are at work, they get little tears in the muscle fiber and protein helps to rebuild that muscle. It is also true that these powders have calories, like any other food, and when used as a supplement to an already high-caloric diet, your protein shake can cause weight gain. No brainer there. When working out regularly, you should have about five small meals per day. If this whey protein shake is used as a replacement for one of those small meals, it can benefit your body greatly.
So, which one should you try? There are so many whey protein isolates on the market. I researched a few. I was curious to see if there were any made specifically for women. It's a cliche for men to drink their protein shake to 'bulk up', but is there a formula that works better for women? There many on the market actually, but when looking at the ingredients and the nutrition breakdown, they seemed the same as all the others. I decided to go to my local health food aisle, and compare the different brands. They all seemed to have the same features: about 1 gram of sugar, 23 grams of protein, and about 160 calories for each serving.
I finally decided to get President's Choice Natural Source Whey Protein Isolate in the chocolate flavour. This morning before hitting the gym, I tried my first glass. It dissolved into my glass of milk well and tasted great. Just like chocolate milk! It's new motivation to go to the gym. I decided to use this as a meal replacement and did not have anything else for breakfast. This is how I intend to use this protein powder going forward.
Well, after my first protein shake and a great visit to the gym, I went to Wal-Mart to pick up a fabulous sports bra! I had been just jogging in my regular bra for the time being and oh, how everything bounced and flopped around. I mean, my chest isn't that big, but still... Now I can be more comfortable jogging in front of the boys. :)
